Martin Green, a football analyst for SportsLine, has made his FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 predictions and choices for Saturday’s third-place match between Sweden and Australia.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA – AUGUST 19: Katrina Gorry of Australia and Filippa Angeldal of Sweden compete for the ball during the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 Third Place Match match between Sweden and Australia at Brisbane Stadium on August 19, 2023 in Brisbane, Australia.

When Sweden plays Australia on Saturday in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup third-place game, they will be in a recognisable situation. In three of their eight prior World Cup campaigns, the Swedes came in third. After a painful 2-1 loss to Spain in the semifinal on Tuesday, they will now compete against the co-hosts for that title once again. In their semifinal game against England on Wednesday, Australia was defeated 3-1. Before earning their first semifinal appearance this season, the Matildas advanced to the quarterfinals three times. They are hoping the supportive crowd at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium will give them an advantage. In the FIFA Women’s World Ranking, Sweden is ranked third, and Australia is rated tenth.

On Saturday, kickoff is scheduled at 4 a.m. ET. The 90-minute money line odds for Sweden vs. Australia now have Sweden as the +135 favourite, while Australia is listed as the +185 underdog. The odds of a tie after 90 minutes are +230, while 2.5 is the over/under on goals scored. Check out Jim Holliman’s predictions for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup from SportsLine before locking in your Australia vs. Sweden choices.

Holliman has approximately 25 years of experience as a writer and editor and has always had a passion for the game. He participated in competitive soccer throughout high school and has been a dedicated fan since the North American Soccer League’s peak in the 1970s. His interest has grown internationally, and his betting strategy is centred on running the statistics, but he still views the entire field and trusts his gut.

Holliman has been lucrative since the 2022 World Cup in several competitions, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and Bundesliga. Last year, he had a 21-10 record on predictions for the Champions League, which resulted in a $1,147 return for $100 bettors.

Why you should back to Sweden

The Swedes haven’t slowed down at all, winning their last three third-place games by a total score of 8-2. In the third-place match of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, they defeated France 2-1. Sweden has also dominated all-time meetings with Australia, finishing 9-4-2 with them and holding a 27-14 goal edge. The Blue and Yellow have several players that can score while being built on a strong defence. Over the course of their six Women’s World Cup games, Sweden has only allowed three goals. The Matildas, on the other hand, have given up three goals in each of their two World Cup games.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA – AUGUST 19: (L-R) Nathalie Bjorn, Linda Sembrant and Hanna Bennison of Sweden celebrate the team’s victory following the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 Third Place Match match between Sweden and Australia at Brisbane Stadium on August 19, 2023 in Brisbane, Australia.

Even if the encounter against Spain was disastrous for the Swedes, they still put on a strong effort. They didn’t permit a shot on goal until the last ten minutes, and that shot gave La Roja the lead by going in. Rebecka Blomqvist equalised with her third goal of the competition, but Spain immediately scored on the counterattack to win. Even yet, the Swedes have defeated two of the strongest teams in the competition after playing three of them in a row, including the USWNT, the defending champions.

Why you should back Australia

Although missing out on the championship, the Matildas’ performance in the World Cup on home soil was their best. They’ll want to do one more concert for the fans. With fewer than 30 minutes remaining in the game on Wednesday, the team’s captain and top player Sam Kerr, who is returning, scored the equalising goal. Australia held their own against the fourth-ranked team in the world until England eventually drew away. Even though Sweden is third in the FIFA World Rankings, they may be emotionally exhausted after losing in shocking fashion in what may have been their greatest opportunity to ultimately win the World Cup.

With 63 goals in 121 games, Kerr holds the record for most goals scored in a country. As Kerr missed the first few games, other players stepped up; Raso has scored three goals in the competition so far. Caitlin Foord earlier in the competition scored her 30th international goal, while Emily van Egmond scored her 31st. Alongside 20-year-old Mary Fowler, who has 11 goals in just 42 international appearances, Foord usually starts at the top of the lineup. With four clean sheets, keeper Mackenzie Arnold has the most in the competition.

How to make Sweden vs. Australia picks

Holliman has analysed the Sweden vs. Australia game thoroughly. He is betting on the total to be over 2.5 goals and also has two additional sure bets, one of which being the result of the third-place match in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. He solely posts his predictions and analyses on the Women’s World Cup at SportsLine.
