Taylor Swift ‘Shake It Off copyright infringement lawsuit dismissed by a judge
It looks like Taylor Swift is out of the woods when it comes to a copyright lawsuit brought against the pop superstar five years ago.
In 2017, songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the “Midnights” singer, claiming the lyrics from Swift’s 2014 hit “Shake It Off” (“Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play/And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate”) infringed on the Hall and Butler-penned “Playas Gon’ Play,” released by R&B girl group 3LW in 2000.
The lyrics to “Playas Gon’ Play,” which peaked at No. 81 on the Billboard Hot 100, included the line “The playas gon’ play/Them haters gonna hate” and “Playas, they gonna play/And haters, they gonna hate.”
In response to a lawsuit, Taylor Swift claims that “Shake It Off” lyrics were “composed solely by me.”

The case was reopened in 2019 by an appeals panel after a judge had dismissed it in 2018, saying the lyrics were “too commonplace” to have been stolen. Although Swift had earlier asked for the lawsuit to be dismissed, the court rejected her request, stating that the songs shared “enough objective similarities.”
Swift claimed in an August statement that the lyrics to “Shake It Off,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, “were written entirely by me” and were inspired by her encounters with “unrelenting public scrutiny of my personal life, ‘clickbait’ reporting, public manipulation, and other forms of negative personal criticism.”
She stated in the court filing, “I had never heard the song “Playas Gon’ Play” and had never heard of that song or the group 3LW until learning of Plaintiffs’ allegation in 2017.”.
Swift claimed that until she was about 13 years old, her parents forbade her from watching MTV’s “Total Request Live.” The song initially debuted on 3LW’s self-titled first album when Swift was 10 years old.
Swift is no stranger to “Shake It Off” copyright allegations. Another U.S. District Court judge dismissed a second “Shake It Off” case in 2014, in which “Haters Gone Hate” composer Jesse Graham claimed Swift plagiarised his lyrics and demanded $42 million in restitution.
